I've used LVS, it works well for many situations. I also like Netscaler, ACE, 
and F5 (I like F5 the best right now- the 9.4 software is dynamite, 
but the price can be a killer) 
Also mod_backhand is an excellent choice if the server in question 
is apache 1.3. I'm sad that no one wants to update it to 2.x ...
